Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer. Most commonly, it develops in the lining surrounding the lungs, in which case it is referred to as pleural mesothelioma. It can also develop in the abdominal cavity, in which case it is referred to as peritoneal mesothelioma. In rare cases, it can develop in the heart, in which cases it is called pericardial mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is known to be caused by asbestos exposure and usually takes as long as 20 to 50 years after the initial exposure to develop. For this reason alone, the diagnosis comes as a shock to someone who may have previously been in good health.

Asbestos Lung Cancer

Lung cancer can also be caused by asbestos. Many people who are diagnosed with this disease assume that it is caused by smoking. Doctors may have told them so. However, the combination of asbestos exposure and smoking greatly increases the risk of developing lung cancer.

Other Asbestos-Related Cancers and Asbestosis

In addition to mesothelioma and lung cancer, asbestos exposure can cause or contribute to the development of throat cancer, stomach cancer, and colon-rectal cancer. Asbestos exposure can also cause a non-cancerous breathing disorder called “asbestosis”, which is characterized by shortness of breath upon exertion.
